It's sad that we live in a world where so many people live to tear other people down. And what's even worse is that so many of the words we use to insult a person shouldn't hold a negative connotation. We shouldn't be tearing each other down regardless, but here are a few things our society views as insults that we really need to put to rest.
First and foremost, there are actually people who identify as gay or lesbian so using that to insult a person is not only offensive to the person you're insulting, but also the entire LGBT+ community. Secondly, there is nothing wrong with being a member of this community, and we need to stop treating it like it is.
Do I even need to say what's wrong with this? Everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about, and you never know what those few words could make someone think or even do. Telling someone to go kill themselves if they're already struggling with themselves validates every negative thought they've had about themselves to the point they think they don't deserve to live.
"Did you take your pills today?"
First off, this is implying that people who are mentally ill can't function normally without their medicine. Why this might be the case for some people, certainly not everyone. Overall its an offensive saying. Second of all, if they do take medicine it makes it seem like they can't have a bad day every once in a while. Like we all do.
Jokes about rape/sexual violence/abuse
The fact is: you never know who you're around and what they've been through. Some people are open about their experiences but some people aren't and those jokes might strike a nerve. It can be triggering, and its just offensive.
Any insult ever, really.
Why can't we all just be nice to each other and keep our negative comments to ourselves. There are better ways to resolve issues with one another than pulling out insults.
It's sad that these don't even come close to the number of negative things we say to one another on a daily basis that poke fun at mental illness or other personal issues or lifestyle choices. And most of the time we don't even realize we do it.
But realizing that we do it is the first step in correcting the issue.
If you hear someone say these words, call them out on it. If no one tells them it's an issue, its going to continue being an issue.
P.S Sorry this is out so late!!!
